Born in Berlin in 1789, Wilhelm von Schadow was the son of celebrated sculptor Gottfried Schadow. He traveled with his brother, Rudolph, to Rome in 1810. He became a leading member of the Nazarene movement, and like its leader, Friedrich Overbeck, he converted to Roman Catholicism.
