Pompejanum in Aschaffenburg
Pompejanum is an idealized replica of a Roman villa, built in 1840–1848 by Friedrich von Gärtner as a summer palace for King Ludwig I, who had been inspired by the excavations in Pompeii. It is modeled after the house of Castor and Pollux in Pompeii. The villa overlooks vineyards and the River Main in Aschaffenburg, a town in northwest Bavaria.
The building was heavily damaged by bombing during World War II but was rebuilt and restored.
Pompejanum is now a museum with artifacts from the State Collection of Antiquities and sculptures from the Glyptothek.
