Duke Ludwig the Wealthy of Bavaria-Landshut founded Bavaria's first university with a papal concession in 1472.
King Ludwig I assumed the throne of Bavaria in 1825 and one of his first acts was to transfer the university to Munich in 1826.
King Ludwig commissioned architect Friedrich von Gärtner to design and build what is today the university's main building,with its beautiful Lichthof ("light court").
