Moritz von Schwind
Moritz von Schwind - Self Portrait (1822)
Born in Vienna in 1804, Austrian painter Moritz von Schwind was a friend of the composer Franz Schubert, with whom he began studies in 1821 and illustrated his songs. He decided to forego music for painting and went to Munich in 1828 (the year Schubert died at age 31) to study with Peter Cornelius.
Schwind was commissioned in 1834 to decorate the library in King Ludwig's new palace with wall paintings illustrating the works of the German poet Ludwig Tieck, one of the founders of the German Romantic movement.
In 1847 he was appointed Professor at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste München (Munich Academy of Fine Arts.)
